  119. to merge up to four horizontal or vertical scans into a full page.

  121. What kind of accuracy can I expect?
  122.  
  123. One can expect over 99% accuracy on typewritten, typeset, laser
  124. printed and near-letter quality printed text.  Because of omnifont
  125. technology, CatchWord Pro automatically recognizes almost all type
  126. faces and sizes in eleven languages. Also, remember the accuracy of
  127. the OCR software is directly affected by the original document quality
  128. and the quality of the scan.

  130. First time users of OCR are often frustrated with the accuracy they
  131. achieve because they do not understand how OCR works or how to achieve
  132. the best results. The following is a list of "tips" that are included
  133. with CatchWord Pro which will help you to get the best results from
  134. your OCR package:

  136. * One of the most important factors in OCR scanning is the contrast
  137. setting. CatchWord Pro for Windows prefers a darker setting for most
  138. originals.  The general rule is to set the contrast at a darker
  139. setting for light original text or broken scanned characters, and to
  140. set the contrast at a lighter setting for dark original text or
  141. scanned characters which touch, are blurred or filled in.  Experiment.
  142. Some OCR programs prefer a light setting while others work better when
  143. the darker setting is used.

  145. * Scan straight with a smooth motion at a speed of about 1/2 inch per
  146. second.  Despite the ongoing improvement in the hardware design of
  147. hand-held scanners to facilitate straighter, more accurate scanning,
  148. some people may still wish to use a book or other straightedge as a
  149. scanning guide.

  151. * For full-page scanning, scan the page in two strips with an overlap
  152. of 1 inch. Scan both sides straight at the same speed.  Be sure to
  153. begin and end scanning as close to the same spot on the page as
  154. possible.

  157. or "black and white".

  159. * The smaller the text, the higher you should set the resolution. Scan
  160. 6- to 8-point type at 400 dpi, 9- to 15-point type at 300 dpi, and

  163. * Test before scanning a whole page. Scan a bit of text and adjust the
  164. settings until you reach optimal recognition.

  166. Three of the most common reasons that an OCR program may misread text:
  167.  
  168. * Unrecognizable fonts or characters. Omnifont technology recognizes
  169. standard fonts by comparing text characters to features programmed
  170. into the software. The software will not read characters that don't
  171. match programmed features. It may also misread similar characters.
  172. i.e., "l" (the number) and "l" (the letter).

  174. * Original document quality directly affects accuracy. Letters that
  175. are faint, touching, or otherwise illegible, may read inaccurately.
  176. Newspapers, photocopies and faxes are often poor originals.

  178. * Uneven scanning, fast scanning, or pausing in mid-scan may result in
  179. skewed, stretched or compressed text.  Follow the tips above to avoid
  180. this cause of misrecognition.

  185. Yes.  Not only can CatchWord Pro import TIFF, BMP or PCX files, but it

  187. TWAIN is an application program interface (API) which allows the easy
  188. integration of a wide range of input peripherals with any software
  189. application needing the information captured by these devices.  TWAIN
  190. describes how to interconnect image capture devices, such as hand-held
  191. scanner or flatbed scanners, with software applications able to handle
  192. the image data format as hand-held scanner or flatbed scanners, with
  193. software applications able to handle the image data format that these
  194. sources produce, such as CatchWord Pro.

  196. Do I have to "train" CatchWord Pro?

  198. No. CatchWord Pro uses omnifont technology which allows it to
  199. automatically recognize any character by comparing text features to
  200. features programmed into the software. For example, a vertical line
  201. with a circle attached on the lower right hand side of it is a "b". If
  202. the circle is on the other side it is a "d". Trainable types of OCR
  203. require the user to teach the software each font and character style
  204. of text they want to scan and recognize.  What users often find when
  205. they begin to use a trainable system is that each individual font and
  206. style requires a time-consuming training session. If most documents
  207. you will be recognizing use standard fonts, omnifont is the best way
  208. to go.
